About National Hunger Awareness Day

National Hunger Awareness Day is an effort to raise awareness of—and donations to help end—hunger in America.

It was created in 2002, at a time when there was a significant increase in the number of Americans unable to feed their families. Hunger-relief organizations such as the Society of St. Andrew were forced to cope with this increased demand while working in an environment with less food surplus and fewer charitable dollars available.  Clearly this dramatic disparity between increased demand and decreased supply needed to be addressed. National Hunger Awareness Day emerged as an important way to increase awareness about hunger in America.

National Hunger Awareness Day is observed on the first Tuesday of June each year.  In 2008 National Hunger Awareness Day is June 3rd.

Ways To Observe National Hunger Awareness Day

The Society of St. Andrew invites you participate in National Hunger Awareness Day.  Specifically, we invite your church to have a special worship service on the Sunday before or after National Hunger Awareness Day, or at another time convenient to your congregation.  Some worship resources are available in pdf format by following the links at the top left of this page.

In addition, please consider the following ways your church can observe the day:

bullet

Pray for our nation’s hungry people.

bullet

Promote a fast on National Hunger Awareness Day.  As you fast remember those who are hungry.  Donate the money that would have been spent on a meal to the Society of St. Andrew.  If you prefer, collect a special offering instead of sponsoring a fast.

bullet

Organize a hunger-fighting group of volunteers.  The Society of St. Andrew coordinates gleanings in many areas of the country. Call us for suggestions in your area.

bullet

Study hunger—its causes and effects.  The Society of St. Andrew has produced a 12-week Bible study, “The Fast That I Choose”, that focuses on hunger in our nation and world and examines our Christian response to it. This study is appropriate for Sunday School classes or other small groups in the church. For a hard copy of the study we ask for a donation of $10. The study is also available on CD for a donation of $5 or it can be downloaded free.  Follow this link for more information.

bullet

Adopt the Society of St. Andrew as your VBS mission project.  SoSA has Vacation Bible School mission materials to supplement your curriculum. Children will learn about hunger while they help provide food to the hungry through their offerings.  Follow this link to order yours.

Help us begin building awareness of hunger in the U.S. and what we as Christians and the community of faith can do about it. Mark June 3rd on your calendar and let’s Do Something About Hunger.
